Altera Corporation, based in San Jose, California, is a company that makes special computer chips you can program. It started in 1983 with $500,000 and a group of experienced people in the tech industry. They made chips that could be changed, and that’s where the name “Altera” comes from.
In 1984, Altera began working closely with Intel, and in 1988, it became a public company. In 1994, Altera bought Intel’s chip business for $50 million.
In 2015, Intel bought Altera, and it became part of a new group called Programmable Solutions Group (PSG). In 2023, Intel decided to separate PSG into its own company, and The company is known for its products like the Agilex FPGA, Stratix series, Arria series, Cyclone series, MAX series, and Quartus design software.
Update:
In Feburary 2024, Intel announced that the newly independent company would reestablish the Altera name and branding.
