FPGA Insights has conducted an exclusive interview with Jananisivasakthi, Software Engineer at Capgemini, to gain valuable insights into her experiences as a woman in engineering

1) What’s your Name, job title & area of research/work?

I’m Jananisivasakthi. Working as a Software Engineer responsible for UI Development in Capgemini.

2) What sparked your interest in engineering? Can you describe the moment you realized this was a field you’d like to pursue? 

Curiosity in coding and designing came together which made me become a UI developer. That drove me to learn more about coding languages and the latest technologies.

3) What are your experiences of being a female engineer?

Being a female engineer Work-life balance plays a vital role and wide opportunities for women employees made more networking among female professionals.

4) Can you tell me more about your career path so far?

I got placed in Capgemini during the final year of my undergraduate. I was working as a Software Associate in the Backend field for a year. Later I was promoted to Software Engineer and shifted myself to UI Development. Now, It’s been 3 years working as a Software professional.

5) What has been your most challenging experience as an engineer?

The duration that I work is a challenging part of daily life. On a technical basis, some software issues or server-down issues are the challenging ones.

6) What is the most exciting thing about your job?

As a UI developer, The website that I made is used by people every day making me feel proud. Also, the people with whom I connect are different professionals, and their way of thinking will always make me feel excited.

7) What kind of impact would bring you great satisfaction in your work?

In some cases, I’ll customize the website which I made, for blind people to announce each section they’re in, so, that makes me feel satisfied.

8) What do you think needs to be done to improve the statistics in terms of women’s participation in engineering?

Apart from their interests, women with a supportive environment will bring the peak of statistics in women’s participation in engineering. 

9) What do you enjoy most and least about engineering?

Every day with new challenging tasks and new people whom I connect with will make me feel good. In the same way, some software issues and lack of recognition will be the saddest part.

10) Who has been your greatest support, coach, and mentor across [Industry], and why?

At the beginning of my career, I can say I was the greatest support. Without any help, I pushed myself to place in a reputed company with development work. Later I got married and now my husband is the greatest support & mentor in my everyday professional life.

11) What is it like to be a woman in engineering? Do you feel that your gender gives you a different perspective and experience from your male counterparts? Any advantages?

In our company, the recruitment of female employees is greater than male. So, that will be the greatest advantage. In the same way, there are events, groups, and mentorship especially made for female employees in our company that are beneficial.

12) What advice do you have for women interested in engineering? What kinds of practical experience should they have? What technical skills should they pick up?

Women interested in engineering should believe in themselves with hardworking personalities. As there is a wide range of departments and career paths for engineering they can choose their interest and train in that field. As per my suggestion, I can say data science, AI, and full-stack development will be the right path for a CSE.
